Tasty Tuesday Plant Based Preparations: Plant Powered Latte

This plant powered drink is a great way to start your day.  Unlike coffee, it provides a steady stream of energy while nourishing the adrenal glands.  Two of the ingredients, holy basil and maca, are adaptogens and have a balancing effect on hormones.  The matcha green tea promotes a relaxed focus, and the turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory.  If you are not particularly caffeine sensitive, this drink could be a nice afternoon pick-me-up. I usually drink it hot but it works equally well iced.  If you do not want to use the holy basil, or just don’t want to take the time to brew it, feel free to use water instead.

-To cold brew holy basil tea, put desired amount of dried tea leaves in a french press along with water.  Let sit over night and plunge in the morning.

-Fill a large mug 3/4 of the way with holy basil tea, and 1/4 of the way with plant milk (I use organic unsweetened soy milk).

-Pour mug into small saucepan and add 1/2 tsp matcha, 1/2 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp maca powder, and sweetener of choice (I use organic powdered stevia but maple syrup would work well here too). Whisk and heat to a simmer.

-To get foam on top, transfer to blender and blend for about 30 sec.  Pour into mug and enjoy!

*If you prefer to make iced, skip the heating and go straight to the blender

*For busy mornings, put all ingredients in individual glass bottles and all you’ll have to do is heat and blend for a hot latte, or just blend for an iced one.  Pour it back into the same bottle to take on the go!
