Mindfulness Monday: Tune Out To Tune In

Living in the information age can often mean living in the too much information age.  The same human brains that created the internet have ironically not yet evolved to comfortably take in as much content as we are exposed to on a daily basis.  There are endless avenues for research available when it comes to any subject, especially health and fitness.

If health and fitness is something you pay attention to,  you probably know much of the information out there is confusing and contradictory.  Even those who do not consciously research it get beaten over the head with fad workouts and diets simply by watching TV.  It is enough to make even the most resolute heath nut among us feel a bit ill.

As a health and fitness data junky, I go down the rabbit hole more often than I like to admit….which is why I started detoxing.  This is not the kind of detox that includes saunas and green juices.  The kind of detox I am talking about means taking a break from gathering information about saunas and green juices.  When I notice my mind abuzz with chatter about every workout I do or meal I cook I know it’s time to take a break.

If you ever get confused about which is the “right” workout or diet plan to follow, I invite you to do the same.  If you feel overwhelmed and need to quiet your brain for a weekend may I suggest the following:

-Trade in any health and fitness related audiobooks or podcasts for music or fiction.

-Don’t even think about picking up that fitness magazine in line at the grocery store.

-Stay away from news programs and TV commercials that tell you what to eat or how to exercise.

-No fitness memes or threads on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

-Do some movement each day that feels good to you.

-Eat some food that makes you feel great.

-Ask you body what it truly wants and why.

-Return to your scheduled program on Monday and incorporate any wisdom you’ve gleaned from your body while your brain’s volume was turned down.

When you are rested and ready to gather more information, head over to the Joyful Gym Rat page on Facebook or follow on Twitter!
